Overcoming Fears

I hate flying on airplanes. And by hate, I mean pit in my stomach, tears in my eyes, death grip on the arm rests kind of hate. The funny thing is I used to love to fly. I loved the adventure, the view, the take-off and the landing. But then I had a few bad experiences that ruined it for me; the delayed flight, the missed connection, landing at the same time as another plane, the lost luggage, etc. The once joyous experience is now plagued by endless "what ifs".

I wish I could tell you that overcoming fears is easy, but from personal experience its not. By the end of this year, I will have flown on 13 planes this year alone. Crazy, I know. So perhaps you're wondering how or why in the world I keep getting on them. Don't worry, I'm asking myself the same question!

Fear is like a thief in the night. If I let fear keep me from boarding those planes this year, I would have missed out on so many opportunities and friendships, and fear would have won. I really can't even begin to tell you how richly blessed I've been this past year by taking those leaps of faith and boarding those planes. When its all over, said, and done with I don't want fear to be the reason that I held back from pursuing a dream of mine. So this means that I have to put a brave face on, and take each flight as they come my way. Someone once told me, "the most amazing things happen when you step outside of your comfort zone."

PS: As you are reading this, I am currently packing my bags to leave on an early morning flight tomorrow for the Influence Conference. If I can overcome this fear, you can overcome yours!

  1. I wish I was going to that conference - it is actually pretty close driving distance to my house but I can't take off work!! Have so much fun! and I am not a huge fan of flying or traveling either. this was a good reminder for me though with other fears, it's easy to let them get in the way.

  5. Prayers for you, Carrie! I'm so excited to spend time with you!
Fear is the biggest thing that I struggle with, but I do not want to let it control me. A life controlled by fear is no life at all, and I don't want to miss out on incredible opportunities and relationships just because I'm scared. Taking a leap of faith with you this weekend!

  7. Oh how I know that fear! The one I am currently wrestling with is a fear of public speaking. You know that white knuckling we do when flying? Same thing for me when I think about speaking in front of people. Thank you for your encouragement today! Have a wonderful time at Influence! Blessings!
